George Benson Guitar Herbie Hancock Percussion Billy Cobham Drums
This collection includes a taste of the combo style that came near to epitomizing Benson's youthful identity as an ensemble player, the organ trio - led here by that archetypal practitioner, Jimmy Smith. Some of My Best Friends Are Blues came off Smith's The Boss, and while it's not the cleanest of swingingest of their meetings, the vibe of the trio is that of both a partying roadhouse band and an intimate small group. As it should, this track makes a forthright declaration of the elemental - the reason it all goes down at all. |
