Multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, bass, drums) Goode was born in 1963 in Chicago. He began learning violin at the age of four, switching to guitar and cornet seven years later, and by the time he graduated from high school he was already playing professional gigs as a bassist and trumpet player. Goode studied with trumpeter Vincent DiMartino at the University of Kentucky, earning his undergraduate degree from there in 1985, and then studied double bass with Larry Gray at DePaul University, leaving with a master's degree in 1987. Although he has played professionally as both a bassist and a drummer, Goode is best known for his work on the trumpet, and has led his own jazz combos as well as playing with the likes of Red Rodney, Jack DeJohnette, Al Cohn, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Harris, Frank Morgan, and many others. He has taught at several schools, including the American Conservatory of Music, Cuyahoga Community College, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. His albums include Shock of the New (Delmark, 1989), Brad Goode (Sunlight, 1995), Toy Trumpet (Steeplechase, 2001), By Myself (Steeplechase, 2001), and Hypnotic Suggestion (Delmark, 2006). ---Steve Leggett, All Music Guide |
