John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie came from South Carolina with an impressive trumpet technique and a mischevious personality. Through the use of rhythms from Latin America and Africa, "Dizzy" became a pioneer in the development of be-bop. On this record, Ken Burns was able to capture the different stages of "Dizzy's" career from his days leading a small combo to leading the United Nation Orchestra and becoming a spiritual father to musicians throughout the world. |
