Mack Avenue, a label that has in recent times released rewarding sets by elder statesmen Gerald Wilson and Terry Gibbs, introduces an exciting new talent in the form of trumpeter Sean Jones. At 25, Jones has a mature style, a warm tone, an ability to caress ballads and a forward - looking approach. Jones was in fact one of the solo stars on Gerald Wilson's 'New York, New Sound' a CD that was Grammy nominated and which also received excellent reviews in the UK press. On 'Eternal Journey' Sean Jones is joined in the front line by another excellent young instrumentalist, saxophonist / flautist Tia Fuller. The rhythm section is made up of comparative veterans (and all outstanding players) - pianists Mulgrew Miller and Orrin Evans, bassist Charles Fambrough and dynamic drummer Ralph Peterson.
This new CD features superb and sometimes fiery original compositions from Jones & Fuller but is paced by lyrical takes on "God Bless The Child", "You Are My Everything" and "The Very Thought Of You". 'Eternal Journey' is an exceptional debut and launches an exciting new talent on the contemporary jazz scene. |
