The Firehouse Five Plus Two, a spirited Dixieland group that often used humor in a good-natured way (such as having a siren go off during their hotter final choruses), recorded a few "concept" albums where a group of titles had a theme of sorts. For this CD reissue of a former LP, the band mostly plays songs having to do with the sea, such as "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," "A Sailboat In the Moonlight," "She Was Just a Sailor's Sweetheart" and "Asleep In the Deep"; however, "Peoria" is a bit of a stretch. The group at the time consisted of trombonist Ward Kimball, trumpeter Danny Alguire, George Probert on soprano sax, pianist Frank Thomas, banjoist Dick Roberts, Ralph Ball or George Bruns on tuba, and drummer Eddie Forrest. Fun music. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
The famous Firehouse Five Plus Two approach their tenth year as reigning favorites. During the past decade they have survived mambo, fast waltzes, cha-cha-cha, polkas, rhythm and blues, mood music, calypso and, currently rock n' roll, without yielding an inch. They remain the nation's favorite jazz band, waving the Dixieland flag, true to the lively tradtions of two-beat jazz. --- Lester Koenig, December 3, 1958 |
