Jazz
with Earl May, Charlie Smith
Today we know him as a Ph.D., a television personality, a leading educator and spokesperson for jazz. For over 40 years, though, Billy Taylor has been a model trio pianist; and this is the unit, together between 1952-54, that launched his career in the trio format. Bassist Earl May (who remained with Taylor throughout the Fifties) was a sure timekeeper and effective soloist, while drummer Charlie Smith was a master of brushes and the other techniques this intimate format demanded. They responded expertly to Taylor's inquisitive harmonic imagination, control of dynamics, and assured rhythmic feeling in this bounteous program of standards and originals. |
