The Men They Couldn't Hang had been evading the noose for 14 years when this gig was filmed at the Live Theatre in Newcastle on 16th May 1998. At that time this venue was one of our favourites. We'd played it 2 or 3 times before, however, this night, Johnny Parker (our buddy, van driver and general all rounder) had brought along a couple of video cameras and with the help of his sister and some friends put together what was to become the main feature of this DVD.
The set is a perfect snapshot of the band at that time. The core is made up of "classic" TMTCH songs combined with "The Eye", "Our Day" and "Never Born To Follow" from the album of the same name released 1 1/2 years previously on Demon Records. 1997 was to see Demon release TMTCH's Six Pack EP and from that "Nightbird" and an exceptionally rare performance of "The Wonder Of It All" make an appearance.
The "Extra Feature" was filmed on my own handheld digicam over a couple of gigs towards the end of 2006 and then edited by Bob Stott. The ides was for any of us to pick it up and film what was going on... so we've got the excitement of the van journey, load-ins and soundchecks. There's footage of us in the studio and backstage rehearsals working out new songs such as "Brixton Hill", "Love Tomorrow" and "Madelaine". You'll find a few different versions of these songs sitting alongside a well lubricated aftershow performance in Worksop. There's a poet we met in Manchester adlibbing a tale of The Man They Couldn't Hang. You'll also find the answer to the question of "How many men does it take to change a guitar string?"

Following the success of their 2005 DVD release "The Shooting" (CRDVD78) Cherry Red Records are pleased to announce the second DVD to feature one of the cult heroes of the folk-rock movement, The Men They Couldn't Hang. The bands formed in 1984 and were soon going down a storm on the Folk circuit. They then eventually signed to Demon Records, which was created Elvis Costello and released a cover of "Green Fields Of France" which became a big hit on the alternative chart.
As each release heightened their profile, the band went on to record for several labels, including MCA and Silvertone, and became a major draw on the live circuit. The band split in 1991, but reformed a few years later to begin touring and recording again. "Never Born To Follow" features a full show from the band's 1998 UK tour filmed in Newcastle, and contains Independent Chart top ten hits "Ironmasters" and "The Green Fields Of France". There is a special bonus footage section, filmed by the band, featuring them at work and play during their 2006 UK tour. The Men They Couldn't Hang enjoyed both Official and Independent Chart success with five top 100 albums on the official chart and three top ten singles (including one number one) and two top five albums (including a number one) on the Independent Chart.
