This Dutch group was founded in 1996 by van Zanen, Delfos and Lucas. They selected a number of very fine musicians who had worked with some of the best bands and artists in Holland and abroad, all jazz & funk orientated. This CD contains a selection of their first three CD's. The first, "Funny Sounds" ('97, tracks 3, 6 & 10) flirted with "easy tune", a retro-style, hot and hip in the London disco's during those days. The hype disappeared, but The Auratones remained. The direction in the music changed to funky soul jazz, flavoured with latin & world. It proved an ideal combination of groovy music and the freedom of jazz improvisation: hot & steamy crowds can tell! The band gained a great live-reputation: an enormous drive, excellent music & presentation and humour on stage. The songs on the CD "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz" ('02, tracks 1, 4, 8, 9, 11 & 13) have a few common factors: a heavy swinging rhythm-section, tight horns and kick-ass jazzy solos. The CD "Mazzu Mazzu" ('04, tracks 2, 5, 7, 12, 14 & 15) marks a new leap in the development of the music of the Auratones. It is more subtle and the grooves are deeper than ever. The sound of the band becomes more and more unique.
Tjeerd van Zanen is a mainly self taugt musician, who played and toured with Jango Edwards, Rick DeVito, Back To Basic and Ugly White Belly, to name a few. Next to being a studio guitarist he is also producer and responsible for the excellent sound of the CD's of The Auratones. Tjeerd twice composed the winning song for the Dutch National Song contest ('99 & '03) and also composed for recording artist Ilse de Lange. Arthur Lijten studied classical music at the Tilburg Conservatory and modern at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. He played and toured with: Blowbeat, Lori Spee, Flairck and State of Monc. Arthur teaches at the Tilburg Fontys Rock Academy and gives workshops, both nationwide and abroad. Erwin Hoorweg studied at the Conservatory of Hilversum and plays or played with Ugly White Belly, Bad Circuits and his own hardbop-sextet The Houdini's, which toured Australia & the U.S. and recorded in New York in the famous studio of Rudy van Gelder. Composes and arranges for a variety of artists. One of his latest projects is the successful CD with Blue note recording artist Trijntje Oosterhuis & The Amsterdam Sinfonietta with music of Gershwin and Billy Holliday. Boudewijn Lucas studied at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. Played and toured with Nueva Manteca, Hans Dulfer, Michiel Borstlap, Mike Del Ferro and Ugly White Belly. He can be heard on many recording sessions. Peter Broekhuizen studied at the Conservatory of Rotterdam, played and toured with Candy Dulfer & Funky Stuff, played with the orchestras of Shirley Bassey and Van Morrison, did tours with Dutch recording artists Marco Borsato and The Golden Earring. Plays latin music and jazz and is member of the unique jazz saxophone quartet Artvark. He arranged the van den Ende musical "Saturday Night Fever" and several TV-shows. Rolf Devos studied classical music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and modern at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. Plays and played with The Houdini's, the Frank Grasso Bigband, Ugly White Belly, Tribute Band, Cubop City Bigband, Lois Lane, Frank Boeijen. Toured Portugal and Spain with the Paulo Gomes Group. Plays in the fine jazz saxophone quartet Artvark, teaches at the Conservatories of The Hague and Zwolle. Marcel Reys studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, was finalist in the 1988 Pall Mall Swing Award, from '89 to '96 soloist of the European Glenn Miller Orchestra. As free-lancer he plays with the Bob Brookmeyer Bigband, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, soloes with the Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw and the New Cool Collective Big Band. Since 2003 he is member of the Amina Figarova Quintet & Septet. |
