Pianist Frank Strazzeri, who composed seven of the 11 pieces on this CD and arranged all of the music, put together an impressive group of West Coast all-stars in 1992 that included tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper; baritonist Jack Nimitz; Bill Perkins on soprano, alto, and flutes; bassist Dave Stone; and drummer Paul Kreibich. The colorful charts swing, make inventive use of the three saxophonists (who play a total of eight reeds), and are both unpredictable and logical. This underrated disc is easily recommended.
