Jazz
For decades South African music master Abdullah Ibrahim has been hypnotizing audiences worldwide. Says Ibrahim: "I am a pilot. I direct my passengers to the dark corners of their souls, to places where they usually don't dare to go." In his music African and jazz rhythms meet with timeless melodies of pure beauty producing a miraculous, trance-like effect. This is music with a strong, flowing groove, a dream-like aura and chill-out vibes. Dr. Ibrahim's musical recipes have often been transformed into other formats like horn sections, big band or string orchestra. Now a young generation of musical creators has started a new kind of transformation or rejuvenation: digital electronical remix.
The remixers presented here have been admirers of Abdullah Ibrahim's melodies and grooves for many years. They did not hesitate for a second when asked if they could imagine delivering a remix of an Ibrahim tune. For most of them this is the music they grew up with and were inspired by when unfolding their own visions of beat and flow. Among the international names in this project are Toshio Matsuura alias DJ Toshio, a worldwide known DJ and former member of legendary Tokyo trio UFO (United Future Organization), as well as DJ Spooky alias That Subliminal Kid alias Paul D. Miller, a New York-based musician, conceptual artist and writer who recently worked a lot with improvising musicians. Some of the other remix artists are members of famous German DJ collectives such as Sonar Kollektiv, Kinderzimmer Productions, Fauna Flash and Motorcitysoul. Their remix versions of Ibrahim classics may soon become anthems in their own right. |
