Anthony Wonsey - Piano Carl Allen - Drums Christian McBride - Bass
* Edward VanLandeghem - Mastering * Jason Standard - Assistant Engineer * Jim Anderson - Engineer * John Abbott - Photography * Satoshi Hirano - Executive Producer * Zan Stewart - Liner Notes
Another Perspective is Anthony Wonsey's second Evidence release. It follows his debut recording, Anthonyology (ECD 22151), which announced the arrival of a new young pianist, with a mature style. Wonsey has held down the piano chair in the bands of drummer Carl Allen, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and saxophonists Vincent Herring and Donald Harrison, and was also a member of Elvin Jones' band. Wonsey is heavily influenced by Bud Powell and performs four of that master's compositions, in addition to six other tracks, on this 61-minute trio recording, which also features Christian McBride on bass and Carl Allen on drums.
Throughout this fine trio outing with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, pianist Anthony Wonsey demonstrates his expertise in straight-ahead jazz. His very interesting repertoire includes four Bud Powell tunes, two originals, Nicholas Payton's "Herbie's Hands," Hank Jones' catchy "We're All Together" and a pair of standards. Wonsey sometimes sounds close to Powell, while at other times, he lets his own musical personality shine through. Excellent music in the bop mainstream. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

An adventurous yet flexible pianist with a potentially significant future, Anthony Wonsey started playing music when he was six. Wonsey studied first with his mother (a classical pianist) and then Zilner Randolph. After earning a full scholarship to Berklee, from which he graduated in 1994, Wonsey moved to Boston and played locally with Roy Hargrove and Antonio Hart, among others. While still at Berklee, Wonsey toured with Christopher Hollyday, Nnenna Freelon, and Kenny Garrett. During the past few years, Anthony Wonsey has played regularly and recorded with the groups of Carl Allen and Nicholas Payton. His debut CD as a leader, Anthonyology, was recorded for the Japanese Alfa Jazz label and released domestically by Evidence. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
