Jazz Big Band Swing
  Recorded: Feb 1955
Double CD release of a February 1955 show from Topeka, Kansas, with Count Basie and his Orchestra on three numbers, backing Basie alumnus Lester Young on three more, and Joe Williams (who had just joined the group) on three songs (including a jazzy version of "Shake, Rattle & Roll"), Stan Getz on four numbers (including an exciting version of "Little Pony"), and Sarah Vaughan on eight songs. Additionally, the George Shearing Quintet featuring Toots Thielemans does seven numbers (including a medley of Shearing hits), and the Errol Garner Trio has a set, and two more Basie numbers with Joe Williams close the show. That's two hours of music, and while the initial burst of sound is ominously distorted, the audio quality settles down comfortably to a nice level with excellent fidelity. Young's sax, in particular, is up close and personal on "I'm Confessin'." Collectors will prize this artifact from the boom years for Birdland. ---Scott Yanow & Bruce Eder, allmusic
