Jazz / Bop
Recorded: Feb 1, 1957, Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey
Except for baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, this is an all-Detroit-in-New York session with Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, and Elvin Jones. Burrell who at 19 in 1951 recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, was fairly well-formed by the time he arrived in New York in 1956. This first Prestige LP features the mellow blending of guitar and baritone sax; the singular sound, along with Flanagan's piano, makes the laid-back blues groove of "Don't Cry, Baby" a particular delight. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.
