Cal Tjader was the master of a fluid West Coast brand of Latin jazz. The first ten compositions here, first released as Latin for Lovers, feature Tjader's classic quintet--Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Afro-Cuban greats Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo handling percussion, Tjader applying his liquid touch to the vibraphone--joined by four strings and Paul Horn on reeds. The second half of the CD was originally issued as San Francisco Moods. The compositions are a musical homage to the city Tjader loves: its neighborhoods and landmarks, the windy bay on which he sailed, and even, in "Viva Cepeda," its baseball team.
