Betty Carter - vocals Norman Simmons Piano Lisle Atkinson Bass
This album was a perfect window onto her mature style, which her major-label recordings had never come close to documenting.
So much of what has made her such a definite jazz artist is caputred here - the impeccable taste in material that leads her to unearth neglected gems and reimagine familiar standards; a predilection for juxtaposing songs in a manner that creates larger narratives and a no-nonsense relationship with a club audience that remains sui generis.
A difference with The Betty Carter Album is her preference for accompanists has shifted significantly - this was the last time that Carter, who has since gained a reputation for schooling young players that rivals Art Blakey's, worked surrounded by her contemporaries.
