The Essential Collection gets seriously cool with our latest set of jazz releases! We take a look at the cool West Coast sound of ace Baritone Sax man Gerry Mulligan. An integral part, both as writer and player, of the Miles Davis nonet that created the legendary and hugely influential Birth Of The Cool album in 1948, Mulligan was truly a jazz giant in his own right. Here we find Mulligan performing with, amongst many fine players, fellow cool school hipsters Chet Baker and Lee Konitz, Larry Bunker, Chico Hamilton and Bud Shank. Featured in both small group setting and in a Birth of the Cool style tentette, this remarkable music sounds as fresh today as it was when it was made over fifty years ago. |
