Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband is the most popular traditional jazzband in Denmark. Recently they celebrated their 50 year anniversary as an orchestra and they are still going strong. Throughout their glorious career they have had two long-time engagement in Copenhagen. For many years they were the houseband at the famous Restaurant Vingaarden and in later years they were the houseband in Tivoli's Jazzhouse Slukefter and at the same time the regular Sunday band at one of the outdoor stages in the Tivoli Garden. These two session are from those venues.

Most of the music from two albums by Papa Bue Jensen's Viking Jazz Band are reissued on this single CD. The seven songs from the earlier session are most notable for the trumpet playing and singing of Theis Jensen, who does a close imitation on Louis Armstrong without falling into satire. His vocals on "Solitude" and "Bye and Bye" come mighty close, and with his trumpet in the lead of a frontline also including trombonist Papa Bue Jensen and clarinetist Jorgen Svare, the group often sounds like the Louis Armstrong All-Stars. The later set has Ole Stolle on trumpet, but once again a few vocals close to Satch, this time by banjoist Bjarne "Liller" Petersen, who stars on a surprisingly touching version of "What a Wonderful World." Other highlights include "Stevedore Stomp," "Lazy River," "Bourbon Street Parade" and "Mahogany Hall Stomp." Throughout this highly enjoyable disc, the ensembles are melodic and exciting, the solos show personality, and the overall results are high-quality Dixieland. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Leader of the Viking Jazz Band beginning in 1956, Papa Bue Jensen is an excellent dixieland trombonist who has been active for decades in Denmark. He had recorded with Chris Barber before forming his group (which, during 1956-1958, was known simply as the New Orleans Jazz Band). Through the years, the band has recorded (sometimes for Storyville or Timeless) with such American guests as George Lewis, Wingy Manone, Wild Bill Davison, Edmond Hall, Champion Jack Dupree, Albert Nicholas, and Art Hodes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
