On Tales From The Hudson tenor Saxophonist Michael Brecker chose to work in an acoustic format, investigating nine invigorating originals, five of which are his. The all-star lineup of Metheny, DeJohnette, bassist Dave Holland, pianist Joey Calderazzo, and on two tracks, McCoy Tyner, couldn't be better.

Tales From The Hudson opens with the leader's "Sling and Arrows," which he describes simply as "fast," and containing "sizzling" solos from Metheny and Calderazzo. Then comes the pianist's luxuriant "Midnight Voyage," where the guitarist's lyricism shines.Tyner makes his entrance on "Song for Bilbao," which Metheny has been playing for some time. "Pat had always envisioned McCoy playing this, and strangely enough, used to call it 'McCoy's Song,'" Michael says. "It was Pat's first time recording with McCoy and he loved it." Brecker's "Beau Rivage" is a homage to Thelonious Monk, and it leads to his "African Skies," revamped from its appearance on Out Of The Loop.
