There are two dancing stars who set indelible standards in the 20th century, standards by which all dancers to follow in the coming generations would be measured. The time prior to World War II belonged to the legendary dancer Vaclav Nijinsky, who stormed European stages as a member of the Serge Dhiaghilew troupe. His artistic expressionism, his perfected style and his powerful leaps are objects of admiration to this day. His successor was found in the person of Rudolf Khametovitch Nureev from Siberia, who acquired worldwide acclaim under the stage name Rudolf Nureyev. There is no ballet stage of any import in the world where Nureyev did not perform. At the height of his career which spanned a period of twenty-five years, he appeared on stage more than 250 times a year. Nureyev danced in movies and on TV broadcasts. He choreographed evening ballets, rehearsed the legendary Russian choreographers of the 19th century in Western Europe and America, and presented ballet galas on Broadway. His repertoire comprised more than one hundred roles. At the time of his death due to AIDS in 1993 in Paris at the age of 54, his public came to realize that he had been performing with admirable energy in spite of his illness during the last ten years of his life. |
